Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Indy Women's Counseling and DBT

Some people feel emotions with a much greater intensity than others.  This can be a blessing when the emotion is an enjoyable one.  However, tolerating distress or painful emotions can be difficult when you are someone who feels intensely.  This can result in impulsive or destructive outcomes to ourselves and in our relationships, as we try to rid ourselves of the emotions or rectify situations over which we have little or no control. Quite simply, without the ability to manage distress effectively, we have to do a lot of “clean up” in our relationships.  This is not fun for anyone.

DBT skills are the difference between someone telling you to “Calm down” and someone showing you HOW to calm down. It is a Skills-based modality and uses four modules to put YOU back in control of your emotions, instead of them controlling you. You gain sovereignty over your thoughts and emotions. You feel increased an increased stability with your mood and this has a positive impact on all areas of your life!

DBT is the evidence-based treatment for Borderline Personality Disorder, though research has found it to be effective in treating many disorders involving our moods. It was created by Dr. Marsha Linehan and is the therapy geared specifically for BPD treatment. Indy Women’s Counseling and DBT offers adherent and comprehensive DBT services, which includes:

  • Individual weekly therapy
  • DBT Skills Group
  • Phone coaching between sessions to reinforce skills use in real-life situations
  • Your therapist meeting with the DBT consultation team weekly to discuss your treatment

Our DBT therapists are required to attend DBT consultation group weekly to ensure we continue to provide the highest standard of DBT service and adhere to the DBT model. There is a difference between “DBT-informed” care and adherent and comprehensive DBT services. If you are suffering as a result of your emotions, please consider finding comprehensive and adherent DBT services. You are worth creating a “Life worth Living.”
